Feasible Elimination Procedures in Social Choice: an Axiomatic Characterization

چکیده
Feasible elimination procedures (Peleg, 1978) play a central role in constructing social choice functions which have the following property: in the associated game form, for any preference profile there exists a strong Nash equilibrium resulting in the sincere outcome. In this paper we provide an axiomatic characterization of the social choice correspondence resulting from applying feasible elimination procedures. The axioms are anonymity, Maskin monotonicity, and independent blocking. Journal of Economic Literature Classification Nos. C70, D71

We show that feasible elimination procedures (Peleg, 1978) can be used to select k from m alternatives. An important advantage of this method is the core property: no coalition can guarantee an outcome that is preferred by all its members. We also provide an axiomatic characterization for the case k = 1, using the conditions of anonymity, Maskin monotonicity, and independent blocking. Finally, ...
متن کاملOn the role of language in social choice theory
Axiomatic characterization results in social choice theory are usually compared either regarding the normative plausibility or regarding the logical strength of the axioms involved. Here, instead, we propose to compare axiomatizations according to the language used for expressing the axioms. In order to carry out such a comparison, we suggest a formalist approach to axiomatization results which...
متن کاملAxiomatization of ratio equilibria in public good economies
Using consistency properties, we characterize the cost-sharing scheme arising from the ratio equilibrium concept for economies with public goods. The characterization turns out to be surprisingly simple and direct. In contrast to most axiomatic characterizations based on reduced games and consistency properties, our characterization requires that in the reduced game, the players take as given t...
متن کاملOn the axiomatic approach to freedom as opportunity: a general characterization result
The aim of this paper is to provide a different, somewhat more general, approach to the axiomatic ranking of opportunity sets in terms of freedom of choice. The opportunity ranking is defined axiomatically relative to some standard of freedom or theory of freedom. The paper then provides a general characterization result of the opportunity ranking in terms of the family of freedom standards.
متن کاملProbabilistic Borda rule voting
An alternative voting system, referred to as probabilistic Borda rule, is developed and analyzed. The winning alternative under this system is chosen by lottery where the weights are determined from each alternative’s Borda score relative to all Borda points possible. Advantages of the lottery include the elimination of strategic voting on the set of alternatives under consideration and breakin...
